What do you focus on when searching for a job? Are you primarily reflecting on your career goals, where to find job openings, and how to create a strong resume? Although these career-related activities are all important when job searching, it is also essential to understand the job search process from the employer’s perspective. Hearing directly from employers provides valuable insights into what they are looking for when sourcing candidates to fill open positions. You can then use those insights to help you stand out from the crowd.
Career Planning and Development has recently launched a new Employer Voices project to share employers’ perspectives on the hiring process. The first featured employer is Blackbird Health, a mental health practice serving children and young adults in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Watch Blackbird Health’s short video to hear directly from their HR director and a staff member on how they source applicants for clinical and nonclinical positions and what they look for in candidates. Whether you are interested in careers in social and behavioral sciences, health sciences, or other areas, Blackbird Health provides valuable insights into the hiring process that are relevant to many employers and workplace settings.

Ready to research potential employers in your geographic area or area of interest to better understand their needs? Apply the strategies below to get started:
- Tap into the many career research tools on the Career Exploration tab and visit the Job and Internship page to find employers who are hiring.
- Visit the organization’s website to read about its mission, services, employees, culture, and more!
- Follow the organization on LinkedIn and other social media sites and connect with their HR recruiters, leaders, and employees.
- Make a list of your favorite organizations and check their “career opportunities” pages often.
Remember that the more information you have about your target employer, the better you can communicate how you are the best fit through resumes, cover letters, networking, and interviews. This proactive approach can help ensure a win-win for both you and the employer.
